<image:title>Blog - Unleashing Creativity: How Thinking Outside the Box Boosts Academic Success - From a Stick to a Story: The Power of Imagination A simple stick can be a sword, an aeroplane, or a magic wand in the right hands. Encouraging children to utilise their imagination strengthens their ability to think flexibly—a key skill for tackling comprehension questions, solving maths problems, and writing compelling stories. We use interactive activities that challenge students to explore different perspectives, make connections, and build logical arguments—all crucial for 11+ exams, SATs, and beyond.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Unlocking the Power of Working Memory in Learning - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Working memory refers to the brain’s ability to temporarily store and process information needed to carry out cognitive tasks. Think of it as a juggling act where we hold onto information for a short time—like keeping a phone number in mind while dialling or following a set of instructions during a lesson (and just like juggling, the more information there is to hold, the trickier it becomes!). Unlike long-term memory, which stores information for the future, working memory is the ‘here and now’—it’s essential for tasks like reasoning, comprehension, and problem-solving. However, working memory has a limited capacity, meaning we can only hold so much information at once. This is why children may struggle to follow multi-step instructions or retain information from lessons if the task demands more memory capacity than they have at the time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Unlocking the Power of Working Memory in Learning - What can we do to improve Working Memory? Here are a few strategies to help: Break tasks into smaller chunks: When introducing new concepts or tasks, break them down into manageable steps. This reduces the mental load and makes it easier for students to remember and process information. Use visual aids and memory strategies: Visualising information can help free up working memory space. Try using diagrams, mind maps, or even colour-coded notes to reinforce learning. Encourage students to make associations and create memorable mental images. Practice retrieval: Encouraging regular recall can strengthen working memory. Rather than simply reviewing information, have students try to retrieve what they’ve learned without looking at their notes. This helps reinforce memory pathways. Use repetition: Repeating concepts multiple times—whether through spaced practice or revisiting a topic in future sessions—can improve retention. This also reduces the cognitive load over time as students become more familiar with the material. Reduce distractions: A cluttered or noisy environment can overwhelm working memory. Create a calm and focused learning space to help students concentrate on the task at hand. Teach memory techniques: Help students develop their own memory strategies, such as using acronyms or creating rhymes.</image:title>

<image:caption>In London, we’re lucky to have some of the best museums and learning spaces accessible and free to access. Museums, galleries and other creative spaces offer the opportunity to see and interact with real artefacts; they have hands on activities that can engage children in a multi sensory way. Not only do these spaces improve your child’s knowledge about the world we live in, they can spark new interests and passions. Learning isn’t all about knowledge. Completing puzzles allow children to improve their learning behaviours: from developing their memory to improving patience and resilience, all whilst having fun!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Many libraries offer summer reading challenges; however, it’s important to remember that reading isn’t exclusively book based. Opportunities to read occur naturally: road signs, ingredients lists, posters, recipe books, game instructions, etc. Take advantage of the warm weather and take the learning outside! Outdoor environments provide a wealth of sensory stimuli, including sights, sounds, textures, and smells. This multi sensory stimulation enhances the learning experience, making it more engaging and memorable. There are numerous apps and websites to support you with your child’s learning, many of which are engaging and fun.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The holidays are a period to enjoy quality time and have fun with your child. If you’re concerned about how to protect their progress, but don’t want to be their teacher or don’t know where to start, we can help. This summer, we’re offering ‘Summer Slide’ packages, which include: 1) a 1:1 consultation with an experienced tutor and an opportunity to discuss your child’s school report and next steps; 2) Summer holiday tuition sessions both in person and/or online; 3) Bespoke learning activities tailored to your child’s needs and interests that they can complete independently.</image:caption>
